Darien High Student is 25th Recipient of Bohdan Kolinsky Sports Media Scholarship

Owen Heffron, a senior at Darien High School, has been selected as the 25th recipient of the Bohdan Kolinsky Memorial Sports Media Scholarship from the Connecticut Sports Media Alliance.
Owen was chosen from a competitive, statewide pool of applicants. The scholarship provides a one-time award of $3,000 to a high school senior from Connecticut who is admitted to an accredited four-year college for study leading to a career in sports media or journalism.
The award honors the memory of Bohdan Kolinsky, longtime school sports editor of the Hartford Courant, who died in 2003 at the age of 49. Bo was a past president and long-time officer of the Connecticut Sports Writers Alliance – now the Connecticut Sports Media Alliance.
Owen will be studying at Syracuse University beginning in the fall, where he plans to major in Broadcast and Digital Journalism at the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications.
Owen has been a member of the Darien Athletic Foundation’s (DAF) Media team since his freshman year in high school, working in front and behind the camera. He is currently a training officer with DAF along with being the lead play-by-play broadcaster on the team. He has broadcast many boys and girls sports including football, baseball, basketball, field hockey, lacrosse, soccer and ice hockey.
In 2023 and 2024, he was part of the “Kidscaster” broadcast crew during Major League Baseball’s Little League Classic on ESPN2. They broadcast games between Washington and Philadelphia in 2023 and the New York Yankees and Detroit in 2024.
