Hank O'Donnell Female Athlete of the Year
Hank O'Donnell was the executive sports editor and columnist for The Republican-American in Waterbury. His sportswriting career spanned 61 years and included time at the Waterbury American and Waterbury Republican. He died in 1983. The award is given to the state's female athlete of the year.

Bill Lee Male Athlete of the Year
Bill Lee spent nearly a half century in the sports writing profession. He was sports editor and columnist of The Hartford Courant from 1939 to 1974. Lee died in 1979. The award is given to the state male athlete of the year. Prior to 1984, both male and female athletes were eligible for the award.

Doc McInerney High School Coach of the Year Award

2019 | Terry Miller, Bloomfield High and Andraya Yearwood, Cromwell High compete in track and field while publicly and courageously championing the rights of transgender high school athletes
2018 | Katie Shea, RHAM volleyball and girls basketball battled autoimmune encephalitis, an autoimmune disorder that affects the brain; Steve Daniels, Southington statistian despite various health challenges
2017 | Giancomo Brancato, Fairfield Warde basketball/baseball; Danni Kemp, Stony Brook and Foran softball
Brancato recovered from non-hodgkins lymphoma to help Warde win state title in baseball; Kemp battled kidney cancer in high school and then earned All-State honors in softball. She played at Stony Brook and with Stratford Brakettes before doctors discovered inoperable brain tumor. She passed away in March 2017.

Deitz had a successful heart transplant last fall; O'Donnell recovered from serious injuries from a car accident.
2015 | Connor Reed, Sheehan High tennis; Jon DeCasanova, Eastern Connecticut State men's soccer
Reed battled back from temporary paralysis to rejoin his Sheehan High team as a senior. DeCasanova beat lymphoma to return to the ECSU men's soccer team.
2014 | Andrew Haraghey, Fermi-Enfield; Morgan Bjarno, Glastonbury.
Haraghey had viral encephalitis as a baby and has shown incredible determination. He is a competitive skier who came up just short of qualifying for the 2014 Paralympic Games. Bjarno couldn’t play soccer at Glastonbury High after being diagnosed with acute lymphocytic leukemia. Her classmates and opponents rallied around her wearing orange ribbons (official color of childhood leukemia) to show their support.

Newman, 51, was diagnosed with breast cancer in March 2008. But she has continued to compete in triathlons. In 2012, she was 8th at the U.S. national championships and second at the world championships in the women’s 50-54 division.

Dave overcame Bell’s palsy and leukemia to play varsity sports at Berlin. He was a member of Berlin’s 2009 Class M championship football team and played tennis as a junior and senior.

2010 | Deb Gruen, Yale and Hamden
A senior at Yale and a record-setting Paralympic swimmer, Gruen was selected to the U.S. Paralympic team. She owns five Paralympic world records. Born with spina bifida, an imperfect enclosure of the spinal column, she uses two canes to get around on land.
