Former Alliance member honored by Travelers' Championship with Ralph Hunt Media Award

CROMWELL – Former Alliance member Bruce Berlet is no stranger to athletic success.

In high school, he played with the Litchfield High boys soccer team as a goalie. They won the state championship in 1963. He also played basketball, helping the Cowboys win a state championship in 1965. He could play golf, too. He won the two first club championships at the TPC of Connecticut in Cromwell before it became TPC-River Highlands – home to the PGA’s Travelers Championship.

He became a Hall of Fame writer, spending 39 years at the Hartford Courant. He covered many sports, including the first perfect season by the UConn women’s basketball team in 1995. But he loved covering golf. In 2009, he was inducted into the Connecticut State Golf Association’s Hall of Fame.

This weekend, he was recognized by the Travelers’ Championship with the Ralph Hunt Media Award. He’s been covering this tournament since 1971.

He served the Alliance for many years. Recently, he was the chair for the Bo Kolinsky Scholarship golf tournament, raising thousands for young students to learn more about journalism in college. Read more on Bruce’s career from John Torsiello at Litchfield County Sports.com.
