Spencer Dreher to Receive Bohdan Kolinsky Scholarship from Connecticut Sports Writers' Alliance
Spencer Dreher, a senior at Naugatuck High School, is the 2015 winner of the Bohdan Kolinsky Memorial Journalism Scholarship, awarded by the Connecticut Sports Writers’ Alliance.
He will be among the honored guests at the Alliance’s 74th annual Gold Key Dinner on April 26 at the Aqua Turf Club, Southington.
The scholarship, named for a longtime scholastic sports editor of the Hartford Courant who died in 2003, was created to help students pursuing college study directed toward careers in sports journalism. It is awarded through competition based on academic and professional promise.
Dreher is committed to enroll at the University of Connecticut. At Naugatuck High, he has maintained a 3.73 grade-point average while taking several advanced placement courses. He also has written for Citizen’s News of Naugatuck, streamed his school’s boys’ basketball games via online radio and helped broadcast the state Class L basketball final on WATR, Waterbury. He is in his third year as a starting pitcher for Naugatuck’s baseball team.
He is a son of Daniel and Johnna Dreher of Naugatuck.
Former professional hockey player Craig Janney, former Killingly High and Providence basketball standout Tracy Lis, former Derby High and Yale running back John Pagliaro and longtime FCIAC official John Kuczo will receive Gold Keys at the dinner.
